CROWN EQUIPMENT
My two semesters as the Visual Design Co-op at Crown Equipment led to quite a few opportunities to strengthen my illustration muscles!
Below are a selection of my favorites, including a pair of illustrations highlighting
the collaborative atmosphere of Crown Design, a short, comic-style storyboard showing conceptual technology, and a pattern showing a few of the things that make Crown's hometown, New Bremen, Ohio, so special.
COLLABORATION
One of the responsibilities of the visual design co-op at Crown is to fill the photo frames in
the design office restrooms! This project, while sounding odd, is designed to give the creative freedom to the intern, so I used the opportunity to create Crown Design-themed illustrations.
My goal was to design a piece of visually captivating and attractive decor, intricate enough for the viewer to explore. The collaboration between the design departments is prominent at Crown, so I was sure to make that the illustration's core theme. The office scenes communicate the variety of tasks and jobs that Crown's designers do, from research to presentations to sketching.
PROCESS
As usual, my process began with sketching! One of my goals in character design was to capture the personality of Crown’s designers without making an exact copy of any individual person.
CONCEPTUAL COMIC
This past-paced project had a single-day turnaround. I developed this three-frame storyboard to communicate the usefulness of an ear piece to aid in Crown’s operant conditioning project. The style and color choices were utilized to focus on the employees, the action, and the conceptual earpiece technology.
Caught in the Act: Mustache Man honks his horn at a pedestrian to alert him that he is behind him. Ponytail Girl sees Mustache Man’s good deed.
Feedback: Ponytail Girl takes Mustache Man aside to affirm him for his good deed. (Their ear pieces pick up their voices and input this information into a database.)
Operant Conditioning: Both Ponytail Girl and Mustache Man are rewarded for their positive actions! They are more likely to do similar actions in the future.

NEW BREMEN PATTERN
During my first co-op at Crown, I created this pattern for the restrooms in the design office. It highlights a few of the traditions and imagery that make Crown’s quaint hometown, New Bremen, Ohio, so delightful. I began with a vision to create a digital, monochromatic pattern, as well as a desire to get to know the town of New Bremen.
PROCESS
I took an afternoon to research the town by taking a walk with my camera. I took note of the street lights, the architecture, and the small shops; this immersion helped me get to know the town personally. I also interviewed my coworkers and researched online for activities that go on throughout the year.
So, my final pattern highlights a variety of imagery that represents the town: Pumpkin Fest, Oktoberfest, the historic bike museum, Crown lift trucks, the coffee shop, and the New Bremen High School Cardinals.
